  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

BluWater Grill

Chef Bill Bruhl and front-of-the-house manager Tanya Phillips were friends at Ryan's Grill for years before departing in 2004 to create their own "American eclectic" bistro on Kuapa Pond in Hawa'i Kai. The result is, inevitably, a little Ryan-like — casual, friendly, busy with affordable prices and contemporary food. Signatures, by Bruhl and chef de cuisine Harold Beltran, include mac nut-crusted prawns, guava-glazed ribs and oven-roasted seafood dip.
