  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

The Contemporary Cafe is a favorite of Honolulu residents who have the urge to run away from city heat and bustle but no time to go farther afield; it's just minutes from town, in a garden court of what was once the historic Cooke/Spalding estate on Makiki Heights and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The hummus and pita plate is a favorite as are soups, salads and panini sandwiches.
