  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

Hula Grill Waikiki, Outrigger Waikiki Hotel

An ocean view, plantation-era furnishings, live contemporary Hawaiian music in the bar and good Pacific Rim-style food — what's not to like? Hula Grill is the cool and calm older brother of wild and woolly Duke's downstairs (they're both owned by TS Restaurants). Chef Steve Balantas presides over a primarily fish and steaks menu, including fire-grilled 'ahi, filet steak Kiana and shrimp scampi. Particularly nice for breakfast with the sun streaming over Diamond Head.

Outrigger Waikiki Hotel, 2335 Kalakaua Ave. 923-4852. Breakfast: 6:30-10:30 a.m. daily, Dinner: 5-10 p.m. daily. Bar: 4-11 p.m. daily. Reservations recommended. VS, MC, AX, DC, DS, JCB. No checks. Breakfast: $. Dinner: $$$.
