  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

La Mariana Restaurant & Bar

You still have time to experience La Mariana Restaurant & Bar. Owner Annette L. Nahinu, shown with her dog, Bombay, is selling the Sand Island restaurant known for its kitsch and comaraderie as well as its comforting cuisine.

Nonagenarian owner Annette Nahinu announced in mid-2006 that she's putting this one-of-a-kind spot up for sale, so get there while it remains its unchanged, tacky, kitschy, hard-to-find self. The Sand Island hideaway is filled with tiki-era tchochkes and old-timers gathered around the piano bar unabashedly singing their hearts out. The food is as period as the atmosphere, mostly grilled and fried seafood and steaks with a few Italian touches. You have to experience it at least once.
