  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

Like Like Drive-Inn

This family-owned restaurant isn't a drive-in and isn't on Likelike Highway anymore, but it's still its old, reliable self, offering local-style diner food and plate lunch of the sort where you get a choice of soup or iceberg lettuce salad, and Jell-O or ice cream for dessert in one of those old-fashioned sherbet cups. The veteran waitstaff is friendly and efficient, and the restaurant is large, so tables turn over quickly. It's hopping late at night.

745 Ke'eaumoku St. 941-2515. Open 24 hours daily. No reservations. No credit cards. No checks. $.
