  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

Lucy's Grill 'n Bar

This contemporary bistro in downtown Kailua is always busy and sometimes a little too noisy, but that's the only flaw we can detect. The upscale but not overpriced "Eurolocal" menu ranges from kalua pig triangles with marscarpone and orange plum sauce to rib-eye steak with Hawaiian salt crust; the wines by the glass are worth looking over. You can munch on a gorgonzola and carmelized onion pizza on the patio or take a date indoors for a more romantic dress-up evening. Good food, good energy.

33 Aulike St., Kailua. 230-8188. 5-10 p.m. daily. Reservations recommended. VS, MC. Checks accepted. $$.
