  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

The Pavilion Cafe

We wish Mike Nevin's little bistro was open for dinner as well. It would be so lovely to be able to watch dusk fall while surrounded by artwork and water features on the campus of the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The Mediterranean menu includes the piadina — an Italian grilled flatbread sandwich with arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, mozzarella and prosciutto — which draws us back again and again.

Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St. 532-8734. Lunch: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and third Sunday of each month. Reservations recommended. VS, MC, AX. Checks accepted. $$.
