  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

Samira's Country Market

Samira's Country Market looks like a sandwich shop (and during the day it is), but come dinner, cult followers come for chef-owner Norman Norman's all-crustacean, spiced-up crab cakes, halibut steaks and exquisite bouillabaisse. It's like being in the home of a really good cook. Half the things on the old-school Continental menu you have to order in advance (there are just nine seats; Norman's not going to whip up a cassoulet for one). With entree prices averaging about $25, and going up to $100 for a Chateaubriand for two, you may be outraged. But you're paying for the very best ingredients flown in from Alaska, New York and other points.
