  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

South Shore Grill

Hungry? Stop here. Linda Gehring (spouse of Ted Tsakiris of Teddy's Bigger Burgers) offers cheap, quick food with a gourmet twist — hearty portioned plate lunches, heaping sandwiches served on ciabatta, well-stuffed burritos and various salads. The boldly colored interior might remind you of a clown, but they aren't fooling around with half-pound burgers topped with chipotle aioli; double-orders of fish tacos, grilled salmon with a choice of sauces and caprese salad made with fresh buffalo mozzarella. Save room for desserts.

3114 Monsarrat Ave. 734-0229. 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. No reservations. No credit cards. No checks. $.
