AMERICAN CONTEMPORARY

Sea sweet: Mariposa's crisply prepared food, like seared scallops, go well with the breezy room overlooking Ala Moana Beach Park.

Mariposa
Longtime chef Doug Lum left Mariposa in 2006, and in 2007 Marc Anthony Freiburg stepped in. Formerly at Sergio's Italian Restaurant at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Freiburg is slowly putting his stamp on the American contemporary menu. The revamped lunch lineup includes house-smoked pork loin in a brown-butter appleshire sauce and “acqua pazza” potato-crusted catch of the day with steamed Manila clams in a saffron fennel broth. Where better to combine shopping and dining than at Mariposa, with its grand view of Ala Moana Beach Park and breezy dining room with its rows of ceiling fans? Outside, tables on the lanai are perfect for the simple yet sophisticated contemporary cuisine and impressive desserts. Well-selected wine list, too.
