CHEAP EATS

A hole in one: At Puka Dog in Waikiki, the buns are warmed from the inside on a custom-built machine, then filled with three kinds of sauces.

Puka Dog
In the seedy Waikiki Town Center is the first Oahu outpost of the Kauai cult fast-food favorite Puka Dog. Owners Rick and Dominique Quinette designed their own machine to cook the no-skin Polish franks (shipped in from Utah). They stick the dog into a bun that's like a mini loaf of bread. Also into the puka goes three sauces a lemon-garlic “secret sauce,” a fruity “relish” (really more of a syrup) and a Hawaiian mustard (more fruit). It's a sweet-and-savory combo. The excellent lemonade is squeezed and mixed before your eyes.
Waikiki Town Center, 2301 Kuhio Ave. 979-2405, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. No credit cards. Checks accepted. $.
