Downtown@HiSAM
Chef-restaurateurs Ed Kenney and David Caldiero have the magic touch. Two years after the duo opened hit Kaimuki restaurant Town, they doubled their workload with the new DowntownHiSAM, where Downtown somebodies wait in line for the anti-plate lunch (but at almost plate-lunch prices how does he do it?). In the sparely modern cafe on the ground floor of the Hawaii State Art Museum, you can eat food that echoes that of Town but doesn't copy it. Grilled duck confit sandwiches, salads chock full of cheeses, nuts and fruits, Manila clams in saffron broth are just a few items on the oft-rotating menu. There's also a take-out counter called Downtown ASAP! where you can pick up panini filled with combos such as roasted vegetables and goat cheese, and a selection of salads. It's the best fresh deal in town.
Hawaii State Art Museum, 250 S. Hotel St. at Richards St. 536-5900. 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. AX, DS, DC, MC, VS. $$.
