CHEAP EATS
Puka Dog
Brave the seen-better-days environs of Waikiki Town Center to find the first O'ahu outpost of the Kaua'i cult fast-food favorite Puka Dog. Owners Rick and Dominique Quinette designed their own machine to cook the no-skin Polish franks (shipped in from Utah). They stick the dog into a bun that's like a mini loaf of bread. Also into the puka goes three sauces — a lemon-garlic "secret sauce," a fruity "relish" (really more of a syrup) and a Hawaiian mustard (more fruit). It's a sweet-and-savory combo. The excellent lemonade is squeezed and mixed before your eyes.
Waikiki Town Center, 2301 Kühiö Ave. 924-7887, www.pukadog.com. 10 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. Cash only.

A hole in one: At Puka Dog in Waikiki, the buns are warmed from the inside on a custom-built machine, then filled with three kinds of sauces.
