2007 'ILIMA AWARD WINNER - CRITICS' PICKS
Kalapawai Cafe'
At Kailua’s Kalapawai Café – the sister eatery to Kalapawai Market, also in Kailua – deli cases glow with inviting dishes (from baked goods to heat-and-eat entrees). Rack of wine are backed by a growing wall of re-purposed corks. Inviting smells emanate from the open kitchen along one side of the long, narrow room that serves as a takeout deli and sit down restaurant. If you want to sit down (after 5:30pm) and be waited on while munching extraordinary tomato and chevre bruschetta and sipping a wine flight, e komo mai. Or grab a thin-crust pizza to go, a morning bagel or back-and-egg wrap at breakfast, or the Kalapawai Market signature Kailua club or French dip. If there was a Kalapawai Café near us, we’d be a bunch of happy foodies. Because sometimes we’re too tired to cook, but we’re never so tired that we’re willing to eat badly prepared food, which is what you at some heat-and-eat operations in Our Fair City. Here, there are both healthy and gourmet options, contemporary and comfort food.
