Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop   Though Hawai'i's Portuguese population is large, it's up to one place — Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop — to represent for Portuguese cuisine. Agnes' is the only place to find Portuguese-style baked goods, and though it's one of many bakeries that serves up piping hot malassadas (balls of deep-fried dough dusted with sugar; the name of these holeless doughnuts translates to something like "half-cooked," for the confection's slight chewiness), many argue that Agnes' ultra-dense version are the most authentic of the bunch. They also sell Portuguese bean soup and vinha d'alhos (pickled pork, a favored celebration food) to sell around the holidays.
