Hawai'i's voyaging canoe Hokule'a is undertaking a two-part historic voyage into the Western Pacific during the first half of 2007.
On the first half the the mission, the canoe will escort the canoe Alingano Maisu, which was built by the Hawai'i voyaging community as a gift of thanks to Mau Piailug, who taught Hawaiian voyagers non-instrument navigation. The two canoes will visit Piailug on his home island of Satawal in Micronesia.
The second part of Holule'a's voyage will take it to the islands of Japan, where the canoe will celebrate Hawai'i's strong links with the nation that is the ancestral home of many of the state's citizens.
The Honolulu Advertiser will follow the entire voyage in text, images, and through weblogs, audio and video.
