The O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball regular season is winding down, and like clockwork, Kailua appears to be heating up for another strong playoff run.

The defending league runner-up Surfriders routed Roosevelt, 16-5, yesterday at Stevenson Middle School field to overtake the Rough Riders for first place in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division at 8-2. Roosevelt, which began the week in first place at 7-1, fell to 7-3 after its second loss to Kailua in four days.

Jared Matsumoto went 3 for 4 with a triple, home run and five RBIs and leadoff batter Kory Sasaoka went 2 for 2 with four runs scored as the Surfriders took leads of 4-0 in the first inning, 8-2 in the second, 10-4 in the third and 16-4 in the fourth.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

"We knew this was a big game, pretty much for first place," said Matsumoto, a senior left-hander who also pitched the first inning. "We've been practicing hard and sticking together. Today I knew I didn't pitch well, so I had to get them back with the bat."

Matsumoto drove in Kailua's first run with a single to left field, and the Surfriders made it 4-0 after an error and Elia Lono's two-run double off the fence in right-center. The Rough Riders cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, after Billy Kamau's RBI double and a wild pitch that scored courtesy runner Shane Miyasato from third base.

Kailua stretched the lead to 8-2 in the second on three hits — highlighted by Matsumoto's two-run triple — and a two-out error.

Roosevelt again cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, after Jensen Miyasato scored on a double-play grounder and Donnevon Ito came home on a wild pitch.

But the Surfriders made it 10-4 in the third on Alan Baldwin's two-run single and then blew open the game in the fourth by scoring six runs on three hits — including Matsumoto's towering two-run homer over the fence in left-center — and another two-out error.

"Our sticks are finally starting to come around," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said.

Rough Riders coach Matt Apana said his team's lack of focus proved costly. All four of their errors came with two outs, leading to 10 unearned runs.

"If we executed, I think it would have been a much different gane," Apana said. "We're young and inexperienced, but there's still no reason why we cannot come out with a better approach. We didn't make the right pitches and didn't play defense ... We can't afford to make those mistakes against a good team like Kailua."
