ATLANTA — The Philadelphia Phillies placed left-hander J.A. Happ on the 15-day disabled list with a strained forearm on Thursday, leaving the team with two injured starting pitchers.
The Phillies activated lefty reliever J.C. Romero. He had been at Triple-A Lehigh Valley recovering from surgery on his left elbow.
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said right-hander Nelson Figueroa will take Happ's next scheduled start on Saturday at Arizona. Figueroa was claimed off waivers from the Mets on April 7.
Happ threw in the bullpen on Thursday before being placed on the disabled list. The move was made retroactive to April 16.
Pitching coach Rich Dubee said he shut down Happ's session.
"We kind of cut it short," Dubee said. "I didn't think it looked right. We had a nice discussion. I'd seen enough."
Happ (1-0) hasn't allowed an earned run in 10 1-3 innings in two starts. He was 12-4 as a rookie last year.
"We think we caught it at a good time," Dubee said. "I feel very positive that it won't be a tremendously extended period."
Happ joins right-hander Joe Blanton (left oblique strain) on the disabled list. Blanton is scheduled to throw 40 to 50 pitches in his next rehab start for Double-A Reading on Friday. Blanton is expected to make at least one more minor league start after Friday's game.
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins (right calf strain) and closer Brad Lidge (right elbow surgery) also are on the disabled list.
"We have a resilient club," Amaro said. "We can't make excuses. That's just part of the game."
Meanwhile, third baseman Placido Polanco did not start in Thursday night's game after he was hit by a pitch on his left elbow in Wednesday night's game.
Greg Dobbs started at third base. Amaro said Polanco was available off the bench.
