Kauai County Council accepts 138-acre property

LIHUE, Hawaii — The Kauai County Council has approved the acceptance of 138 acres of oceanfront property adjacent to Lihue Airport.
The action came Wednesday after Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. accepted the property from Kauai Development LLC.
Carvalho says getting more coastline for public ownership in perpetuity is a win for everyone.
The county says the transfer of the parcel was put into motion by amendment to the Kauai Lagoons zoning ordinance. It was approved by the County Council and signed by the mayor in October. The amendment allowed the developer to move forward with the project.
Officials say specific plans for use of the parcel are being developed.
Former Mayor JoAnn Yukimura says the land will likely be used for the Ke Ala Hele Makalae multi-use coastal path.
