Mental health group to honor 7 "unsung heroes"

Mental Health America of Hawai'i on Tuesday will recognize seven "unsung heroes" who have worked to improve mental health care in the Islands and reduce the stigma of mental illness.

The awardees are: Brigadier Gen. Stephen L. Jones, commander of Pacific Regional Medical Command and Tripler Army Medical Center; Kathleen Rhoads Merriam, statewide clubhouse cooridinator for the Department of Health; Mary Jane Amundson, president of the Institute for Family Enrichment; Gail Breakey, co-founder of Hawai'i Healthy Start; the Marriott Resort in Kaua'i, which hires a large number of clients with mental illnesses; Mike Pablin, a mental health consumer and advocate; and Iris Yawen Xiao, a youth consumer advocate.

The fifth annual Mental Health Mahalo Awards luncheon runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel. Tickets are $55 in advance or $60 at the door.
