Brashton Satele's pursuit of a National Football League career is now going coast to coast.

After the Oakland Raiders withdrew an offer with the former University of Hawai'i middle linebacker, the New York Jets called, offering Satele a tryout.

"We'll see how it goes," said Kenny Zuckerman, Satele's agent.

Satele probably faces a more favorable situation with the Jets than the Raiders. Mike Smith, who was a graduate assistant helping with the Warrior linebackers in 2009, is now an assistant with the Jets.

The Jets did not select a linebacker in the past week's draft. A few days ago, they announced that Vernon Gholston, a former No. 1 pick, would move from outside linebacker to defensive end.

The Jets did sign two undrafted free agent linebackers — Kevin Basped of Nevada and Broderick Stewart of Vanderbilt — who will participate in this weekend's mini-camp for rookies and free agents.

A couple of hours after the NFL's three-day, seven-round draft ended Saturday, Satele reached agreement on a standard free-agent contract with the Raiders. He was to receive a signing bonus.

Satele received a faxed copy of the contract, which he signed and then sent back to the Raiders. But the Raiders did "not execute" the contract, according to Zuckerman, making Satele free to look elsewhere. It is not known if he still will receive a signing bonus from the Raiders.

Satele became available to NFL teams after the NCAA rejected his request for a medical hardship that would have allowed him to play for the Warriors as a sixth-year senior in 2010.

Satele was impressive at UH's Pro Day April 1. He was credited with running the 40-yard dash in 4.60 seconds.
