Roosevelt survived a major scare from visiting Moanalua, 49-43, in double overtime last night to advance to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference girls basketball finals.

The Rough Riders improved to 14-2 in league play and will face Eastern Division co-champ Farrington (14-1) tomorrow at Mililani. Tipoff is scheduled for about 7 p.m., and the game will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Farrington can clinch its second straight OIA title with a victory; if Roosevelt wins, the teams will meet again Saturday in a winner-take-all playoff.

Moanalua (11-7) will enter next week's state tournament as the OIA's No. 3 seed.

But Nā Menehune was in good position twice last night to finish at least second. They led, 36-33, until Rough Riders guard Nicole Ramirez converted a three-point play to tie it with 54 seconds remaining in regulation.

Moanalua's Kiley Lau picked up a loose ball and put up a 12-foot jumper as time expired, but the ball glanced off the rim.

Roosevelt's Kelcie Namba scored on a left-handed layup to put the Rough Riders up, 39-38, with six seconds left in the first overtime, but Nā Menehune's Jasmine Funtanilla was fouled on a shot attempt as time expired and was granted two free throws.

She made the first, but missed the second to force a second OT. Moanalua was 2 for 9 from the line in the fourth period and first overtime.

"They gave us a pretty hard run, they wanted it and came here to win," said Ramirez, who finished with a game-high 16 points. "But we kept our heads up, and we tried to play solid defense."

Nā Menehune took a 41-39 lead on Lau's jumper 13 seconds into the second OT, but Ramirez drained a 3-pointer with 3:14 remaining and Namba followed with a layup and then a free throw to put Roosevelt ahead, 45-41, with 1:05 left.

A.J. Verdida closed it to 45-43 on a bank shot eight seconds later, but Ramirez answered with two free throws with 46 seconds remaining and Shaina Kawakami closed it out with two free throws in the final 32 seconds.

Namba added 12 points for the Rough Riders. Funtanilla led Moanalua with 13 points.
