The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says an area of thunderstorms south of Hawaii is continuing to move east at between 15 to 20 mph and that chances for development into a tropical cyclone is low.
In its early-morning update, the hurricane center said the storms had been showing signs of intensifying and organizing for several hours.
The storms are about 1,375 miles south of Honolulu.
The hurricane center yesterday said that it was tracking the storms because El Nino conditions can contribute to formations of cyclones in the Central Pacific basin even though the hurricane season is over.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a high-surf advisory until 6 p.m. Friday.
Surf along north- and west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai and north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui will range from 12 feet to 18 feet through tonight.
