Freshman post Alex Masaquel scored a game-high 20 points — including 18 points after the first period — to help 'Iolani outlast Farrington, 63-58 in overtime last night in the Hawaiian Airlines Girls Basketball State Championship quarterfinals.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up Raiders improved to 13-3 in regular and postseason play and will face No. 1 seed and defending champ Konawaena (11-0) of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation in today's 5 p.m. semifinal at Blaisdell Arena.
No. 2 seed Lahainaluna (15-0) will play No. 3 seed Punahou (12-1) in the other semifinal at 7.
Both games will be televised live statewide on OC16.
Last night at McKinley's Student Council Gym, Masaquel gave 'Iolani the lead for good on a putback with one minute remaining in overtime, making it 59-58. Farrington — the No. 4 seed and O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion — missed three close shot attempts with about 30 seconds left, and the Raiders grabbed the rebound.
Lori Yamashita then sank two free throws with 23 seconds remaining, and Lahela Usui sealed it with two more free throws 14 seconds later.
'Iolani made 28 of 34 free-throw attempts (82 percent). Farrington was 15 of 29 (52 percent).
Both teams had a chance to win near the end of regulation, but Masaquel missed a bank shot with 10 seconds left and the Govs' Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo's baseline jumper glanced off the rim as time expired.
Usui added 16 points for the Raiders. Tatupu-Leopoldo led the Govs (15-2) with 18 points and Kirsten Liana added 15.

KONAWAENA 58, KAPOLEI 31
The Wildcats lived up to their top-seed billing last night, jumping out to a 16-3 lead after the first period and taking a commanding 38-12 lead into halftime.
Konawaena finished the second quarter with a 10-0 run, mostly off steals and layups.
"They caught us in a halfcourt trap," said Kapolei coach Jesse Baugh, whose team fell to 12-6. "I thought they would switch to a fullcourt trap, but the halfcourt trap seemed to be working so they stuck with it. We were making high passes instead of bounce passes, and we weren't attacking the basket even when we broke it."
Dawnyelle Awa led the Wildcats with 17 points and Lia Galdeira, the 2009 Advertiser State Player of the Year, added 13 points. Galdeira, who has been nursing a sore left (non-shooting) shoulder all season, had eight points and five steals in the first period alone.
"It felt great (tonight), felt super good," said Galdeira, a sophomore guard.
