Hawaii County police last night charged Joseph Edgar Jr. with first-degree negligent homicide in connection with a two-vehicle collision Tuesday night that killed a 17-year-old girl.
Edgar, 21, of Kealakekua, also was charged with two counts of negligent injury, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and reckless driving.
Edgar’s bail was set at $102,000. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock.
Police say Edgar was speeding and driving the wrong way on Queen Kaahumanu Highway when his multipurpose vehicle collided with a taxi van.
Angela Apostadiro, a passenger in the taxi being driven by her mother, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her mother and an 88-year-old woman who may have been a fare in the taxi were hospitalized.
Police said Apostadiro is the seventh traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with four at this time last year.
