Young musicians compete for regional championships

Check out some of Hawai'is young musicians as they compete today and tomorrow for regional titles and a chance to advance to a national event.
The Music Teachers National Associations southwest division performance competition will feature the first-place winners and representatives from Hawaiçi, Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah in the categories of chamber music, composition, piano, strings, vocal and winds.
Hawaiçis competitors include: Tiffany Cheung (senior high, piano), John Cole (junior high, strings), Marina Mitsuta (young artist, piano), Teresa Ou (senior high, strings), Tyler Ramos (junior high, piano), T.J. Keanu Tario (senior high, composition) and Che Hua Yu (young artist, strings). The performance schedule is posted at www.hmta.org. Chandra Susilo, formerly of Hawaiçi, will be competing for Arizona. The winners from seven regions will compete later this year in Albuquerque.
The public is invited to the regional event at the University of Hawaiçi-Mänoas music department. Admission is free.
