Oregon man, 49, dies after being caught in a riptide
A 49-year-old man from Portland, Ore., died yesterday after getting caught in a riptide at Oneloa Beach on Maui, police said.
Kíhei police officers responded at 12:17 p.m. to the report of a drowning at Oneloa, also known as Little Beach.
The man and a male companion were swimming and experienced difficulty because of the tide, police said. Lifeguards brought both to shore, but the 49-year-old man was not breathing, Maui police said.
Lifeguards performed CPR on the man, but efforts to revive him failed and he died at the scene, Maui police said. Identification is pending notification of next of kin and and an autopsy, officials said.
The second male was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. He was listed in good condition.
