National nonprofit Keep America Beautiful and its partner, Waste Management, recently honored Maui-based Keep The Hawaiian Islands Beautiful (KHIB) and the Big Island’s Keep Hawaii Beautiful as recipients of the nationwide Target City awards program.
The two nonprofit organizations are among only 23 organizations from across the United States chosen to each receive a $5,000 award as part of the program.
Over the last 18 months, KHIB’s statewide efforts included: removal of 341,909 pounds of litter; recycling of 3,263 pounds of material; planting 3,590 native Hawaiian plants; and cleanup of 489 miles of shoreline.
The Target City awards, sponsored by Waste Management, are presented by Keep America Beautiful to local organizations that work to prevent litter, reduce waste and beautify public spaces.
