WAIPAHU — A fire yesterday morning killed two pet dogs and extensively damaged the interior of a four-bedroom home in Waipahu.

The family of three was not home when the fire broke out just before 7 a.m. at 94-1108 Kahuamo St. The fire was declared under control at 7:23 and extinguished at 7:30.

When firefighters arrived, a neighbor was using a garden hose to try to put out the flames and protect his own home, Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

Seelig said firefighters used their compressed air foam system to weaken the fire, then entered the house with hoses.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and the home was uninhabitable. Damage was estimated at $260,000 to the structure and $40,000 to the home's contents.
