A 22-year-old Kalihi man was critically wounded last night when he was shot a few blocks from his home.

The man was shot more than once, but police did not specify how many times or where he was wounded. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center after the 8 p.m. shooting and was in critical condition.

No arrests had been made as of 10 p.m.

Police said the victim was at his Ahu Lane home last night when he received a call to drop off a tool at a shop on Owen Street. Police Lt. Lester Hite said the victim and a friend drove less than a half-mile to the shop, parked at the corner of North King Street and Owen Street, and walked down a lane to drop off the tool.

While walking back to the car, the victim "had a conversation" with a group of people who were drinking near their car. At that point, an individual in the group fired at least three shots at the victim.

The victim's friend was not hurt.

Hite said the wounded man ran east on North King, over the Ola Lane overpass and back to his home, leaving a trail a blood. An ambulance was called to the house.

Minutes later, a member of the victim's family angrily walked out of the lane with his shirt covered in blood and shouted that he wanted to be with his brother and that "somebody set us up."

Police said the group that included the gunman dispersed after the shooting. Police did not know how many people were in the group; no weapon was recovered.

A woman who lives near the victim's home said that she heard several people shouting and that a man was very angry. She said she did not hear gunshots.

Neighbors were outdoors watching police officers and Emergency Medical Services crews at work and speculating about what might have happened.

Police closed North King Street from Middle to Umi streets, and also roads in the Owen Street area and the H-1 Freeway overpass.
