Chris Owens of Sunset Beach completed an 89-mile journey across the Kaua'i Channel on a paddleboard Thursday.

Owens started at Mokule'ia Beach, O'ahu, on Wednesday afternoon and reached Kalapaki Beach, Kaua'i, on Thursday afternoon. He took 22 hours, 6 minutes to complete the crossing.

He is believed to be the second person to cross the Kaua'i Channel on a paddleboard. Gene Smith was the first in 1940.

An escort boat followed Owens across the channel.

"I'm in absolute awe," said North Shore lifeguard Dave Yester, who was on the escort boat. "To paddle through that slop the whole night, alone in the dark? I mean, we were all getting nauseous on the boat."

Owens battled through rough conditions and a bout of motion sickness midway across the channel.

Paddleboards are streamlined surfboards designed to ride ocean swells. They are powered only by arm strokes, much like paddling a surfboard.

It was Owens' second attempt at crossing the Kaua'i Channel this year. In May, he withdrew because of fatigue after completing 54 of the 89 miles.
