Iolani and California schools Los Alamitos, Rim of the World and Bakersfield swept matches yesterday in the double-elimination championship bracket of the Ann Kang Invitational girls volleyball tournament at Iolani.
Iolani, of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, beat Redondo Union (Calif.), 24-21, 25-23.
Los Alamitos edged defending state champion Punahou of the ILH, 25-24, 25-23.
Rim of the World beat Kahuku of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, 25-16, 25-13.
Bakersfield beat El Toro (Calif.), 25-21, 25-17.
In later matches, Kahuku eliminated Punahou from title contention with a 22-21, 25-23 victory; and Redondo Union beat El Toro, 25-24, 25-24.
Competition starts today at 9:45 a.m. The championship match will be at 7 p.m. A second championship match, if necessary, would follow with a first-to-15 format (17-point cap).
The tournament features 10 teams from Hawai'i and 10 from California.
Formerly the Iolani Invitational, the tournament was renamed in memory of Kang, a longtime Iolani coach who died in 2003 after she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
