Marathon to close streets, detour bus routes

East Honolulu residents will contend with street closures and traffic restrictions Sunday during the running of the 33rd Honolulu Marathon.

The 26.2-mile run begins at 5 a.m. on Ala Moana, loops through part of downtown and heads toward Hawai'i Kai. There the route reverses direction and finishes at Kapi'olani Park.

On some large roadways, runners will be given exclusive use of lanes in one direction and vehicle traffic will be contraflowed on the other side. For example, the makai lanes of Kalaniana'ole Highway will be closed to traffic; cars will be contraflowed on the mauka lanes.

In other areas, police officers will allow or stop traffic depending on the flow of runners at the time.

Race-day tow-away zones will be marked and be in effect from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

For marathon-related traffic information, call the Honolulu Marathon office today and tomorrow between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

More information is available at www.honolulumarathon.com.

In addition, some bus routes will be canceled and/or detoured. Call Oahu Transit Services at 848-5555 or visit www.thebus.org.
