140 finish marathon in Iraq

Associated Press

A 46-year-old U.S. Army soldier won the Honolulu Marathon satellite race in Iraq yesterday.

Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Williams of the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y., finished the 26.2-mile run in 2:59:57.

Lt. Lauren Koban, 24, of the Army's 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., won the women's race in 3:38:30.

A total of 187 runners, mostly U.S. Army personnel, were registered for the race. Workers for U.S. contractors, including two from South Africa, also ran.

All told, 140 finished the course.

Officials had planned to hold the race Dec. 11 to coincide with the main marathon in Honolulu but postponed it because of concerns that the date would be too close to last week's Iraqi national elections.

Marine Lt. Col. Jim O'Donnell, organizer of the satellite marathon, said the run went smoothly. A fire engine sounded its air horn to signal the start, he said.

The race was held within Camp Victory, the compound in southwest Baghdad hosting the headquarters of the multinational force. It included a one-mile loop at the start followed by four 6.3-mile loops within the compound, O'Donnell said.

Temperatures were in the 40s at the 6:30 a.m. start. "There were a couple hills, but nothing compared to Diamond Head," he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

O'Donnell, 47, who has run the Honolulu Marathon five times, was the last finisher, in 6:20:00, which he said was considerably slower than his Honolulu finish times. He attributed his slow pace to knee injuries.

"My knees couldn't take the pounding," he said. "Finishing was not a question in my mind, but I didn't want to be the last runner across the finish line."

Three female lieutenants running their first marathon held hands the last 100 yards and crossed the finish line together, he said.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Taniguchi, of Honolulu and the Hawai'i Army National Guard, finished in 3:56:50, also slower than his finish in five previous Honolulu Marathons. His brother, Keola, who ran in Honolulu a week earlier, had predicted a 3:20 finish for his brother.

The finishers received official Honolulu Marathon T-shirts and medals.

Last year, an Army captain organized the first satellite Honolulu Marathon at Forward Operating Base Ripley in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.
