Woman hurt in single-car crash

A 47-year-old Waialua woman was in critical condition yesterday after her truck ran into a rock wall on the southwest corner of Lumiaina Street near Waikele Shopping Center.
Just before the 12:08 p.m. crash, witnesses saw the woman's red 2001 Nissan four-door pickup truck weaving in and out of traffic, police said. Speed may have been a factor in the single-vehicle crash, police said.

MAN ARRESTED IN VUITTON PURCHASE
A 27-year-old man was arrested yesterday when he tried to return an item at the Louis Vuitton store in Ala Moana Center that was allegedly purchased with a stolen credit card two months before.
The man allegedly had bought about $300 worth of merchandise and tried to return one of the items yesterday when a clerk recognized him and called police, police said.
Officers arrested him for investigation of fraudulent use of a credit card. The initial purchase was made Oct. 16 at the same store, which was unaware at the time that the credit card had been stolen, police said.

ONE DEAD, 15 HURT IN CAR-BUS COLLISION
A Ha'iku man was killed and 15 bus passengers were injured Saturday night when a car hit a bus on Ho'opalua Road.
Derek Beaty was driving a 1995 four-door Volvo along Ho'opalua Road toward Kula Highway when he failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a bus carrying 20 passengers, Maui police said yesterday. Beaty suffered fatal injuries, police said.
Fifteen passengers on the bus were taken to Maui Memorial Center for treatment. Police did not provide information on the nature of their injuries.
DISASTER CENTER PICKED FOR HONOR
The Pacific Disaster Center on Maui has been formally elected for membership in the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners.
The center was chosen along with five other new members to join the federation's diverse spectrum of data centers, researchers, scientists and others who are committed to sharing Earth sciences-related information across a variety of fields.

THREE TEACHERS NAMED FOR PRESIDENTIALS
Three Hawai'i teachers have been named state finalists for the 2005 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. They are Loren Ayresman, a mathematics teacher at King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani, Maui; Sandra Nakagawa, a science teacher at Moanalua High School; and Jeanine Nakakura, a teacher of gifted and talented students with the McKinley complex of schools.
CHARITIES GET $1M FROM HOTEL GROUP
The Hawai'i Hotel & Lodging Association distributed grants to 44 O'ahu charities from the record $1,019,113 raised this year at its annual statewide Visitor Industry Walk.
Among the O'ahu beneficiaries are Goodwill Industries of Hawai'i Inc., United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii and the Hawai'i National Guard Volunteer Support Organization.
OUTRIGGER GIVES $10K TO COUNCIL
Outrigger Enterprises Inc., has donated $10,000 to The Nature Conservancy's Corporate Council for the Environment, which was formed to engage the business community in caring for Hawai'i's environment.
The Corporate Council for the Environment also received a $5,000 donation from Goodfellow Bros. Inc. of Kihei, Maui.
