STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford got outhustled, outmuscled, outrebounded and outshot — and coach Trent Johnson could hardly believe his eyes.

"Ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly," the second-year Cardinal coach said.

Ross Schraeder scored 19 points and UC Irvine used an impressive shooting performance and just plain hard work to shock No. 13 Stanford, 79-63, in the Cardinal's season-opener yesterday, earning coach Pat Douglass his 500th career victory.

Shamar Armstrong scored six straight points in the final 3:19, and the Anteaters took advantage of a significant height advantage to pound the ball inside at every opportunity against a Stanford squad missing starting forward Matt Haryasz, who sprained his ankle in practice Friday.

"It's sure nice to win No. 500 in a game like this against Stanford, a team and program I respect so much," Douglass said. "We shot well in our last game, and we stayed in sync today."

Darren Fells added 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks for UC Irvine (2-1), which beat Stanford for the first time in six meetings. Dan Grunfeld scored 29 points for Stanford, picked to finish second in the Pac-10 behind Arizona.

Stanford cut the lead to 61-56 on Grunfeld's basket with 3:54 left, then Armstrong hit a tough 3-pointer on the other end with the shot clock winding down. On the next trip down, Armstrong converted a three-point play.

"That 3-pointer seemed to be one of the keys," said Douglass, in his ninth season at Irvine and 25th overall.

The last time the Anteaters beat an opponent ranked higher than Stanford was on March 11, 1988, a 74-70 win over seventh-ranked UNLV.
