Family searches for missing Oregon man

By Karen Blakeman

A 24-year-old Oregon man has been missing on Kaua'i since shortly after his arrival Nov. 9, and family members have arrived to search for him.

Daniel Marks came to Kaua'i from Portland, said his sister, Susan Marks. He checked into the International Hostel in Kapa'a that night and checked out the next day. Friends and family members haven't heard from him since.

His last banking transaction was on Nov. 8, when he withdrew $39.

Marks had airline tickets to fly to San Francisco on Nov. 16, and on to Minnesota on Nov. 20, but didn't use them.

Susan Marks and another brother, Ron Marks, flew to Kaua'i on Thanksgiving to look for Daniel.

Police have also been searching, and both the family and police have had reports of the man hitchhiking or camping in various areas on Kaua'i.

People are reporting that Daniel, who had no previous illnesses, looks disoriented, Susan Marks said.

She said her brother was to have helped her prepare for her wedding early next month and was planning to travel with her and her new husband to Central America before starting graduate school in Portland in January.

Susan Marks said her brother is about 5-feet-8, weighs 130 to 140 pounds, has dark brown hair and eyes, and wears his hair, which is curly, shoulder-length. His beard is growing out and has a reddish tint, she said.

He sometimes wears a green and black sarong tied around his shoulders or pants while camping, she said.

Susan Marks asked that people with information call Kaua'i police by dialing 911 or (808) 241-1711, and her own cell phone at (218) 591-6554.
