Kaiser High grad Clay Stanley scored a match-high 22 points as the USA men's national volleyball team won its third straight match at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup by sweeping Egypt, 25-12, 25-21, 25-15, yesterday at Tokyo.
Stanley, a former University of Hawai'i standout, had 16 kills, three blocks and three aces for Team USA (3-1), which is assured a spot in the top three regardless of its result in its final match today.
"We played an excellent game (Friday against Italy), and when you get a win like that you do not want to let it go to your head," said Stanley, the tournament's third-leading scorer with 69 points on 55 kills, eight blocks and six aces. "We made a decision to come out here today and take care of business."
Jim Polster tallied 12 points on 11 kills and one block for Team USA, which plays China in its finale this afternoon.
"We are very happy with our win against Egypt, a very young, athletic team that can play the game at a high level," said Team USA head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "Clay Stanley was great serving the ball today and hit for a very high efficiency as well."
In yesterday's other matches, Brazil (4-0) moved into the driver's seat for a gold medal by edging Italy (2-2) in five games, while Japan improved to 2-2 with a five-game win over China (0-4).
