When Radford coach Fred Salanoa spotted replacement quarterback Justin Lord at a store before the game, he had to remind him to relax.

Lord calmed his nerves enough to lead the Rams to a 37-27 win over Kamehameha-Maui in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Division II Championships last night at Radford's Velasco Stadium.

Lord, a converted receiver, threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another, and completed 10 of 17 passes for 150 yards.

"He looked like a deer in the headlights (at the store)," said Salanoa of Lord, who stepped in for starting quarterback Ryan Burciaga, who was injured in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Championships two weeks ago.

Radford advances to play Iolani in the championship game Friday at 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Iolani defeated Moanalua, 48-20, in the other semifinal game yesterday.

Radford (9-2), the OIA champion, received an opening-round bye. Kamehameha-Maui (6-7), of the Maui Interscholastic League, advanced to the semifinals by beating Kaua'i, 14-7, last week.

Lord's first touchdown was a 22-yard pass to receiver Kyle Blair with 6:32 left in the quarter.

The Warriors tied the game on a 52-yard touchdown pass from Keahi Raikes to receiver Rocky Keawekane with 1:45 remaining in the quarter, and Kainalu Severson's kick made it 7-7.

The Rams answered on their following drive on a 6-yard run by Lord, which was set up by a 70-yard kickoff return by Blair.

Jamie Whitworth kicked a 32-yard field goal with 4:43 left in the second quarter.

Radford's Mike So'oto scored on a 36-yard pass from Lord with 6:06 left in the third, and Trevor Maldon scored on a 1-yard run with 3:16 remaining to give Radford a 31-7 lead.

"It was good for us to get up early, because it relieved a lot of the pressure on Lord," Salanoa said.

The Warriors scored on a 1-yard run by Shane Kamakaokalani with 1:34 left in the third quarter, and an 83-yard pass from Raikes to Keawekane with 5:51 left in the fourth made it 31-21.

Radford's Luke Failauga scored on an 11-yard run with 59.4 seconds left. The Warriors' Keawekane caught an 80-yard TD pass from Bryan Pali with 45.2 seconds to go.

"It's kind of what we try to establish at the school and with this program, putting out the best effort until the last second ticks off the clock," Warriors coach Leo Delatori said.
