Gas-price drop of 1 cent expected

By Greg Wiles
Advertiser Staff Writer

Hawai'i's wholesale gasoline price cap could decline on Monday for an eighth straight week.

Advertiser calculations show the price may fall by about 1 cent a gallon if recent wholesale market pricing trends persist through today. The state will announce tomorrow next week's cap.

The state has cut the maximum prices wholesalers can charge for seven consecutive weeks, starting with the week of Oct. 17. Hawai'i's price regulation, the only one of its kind in the nation, is based on five days of wholesale price data from New York, the Gulf Coast and Los Angeles.

The Advertiser's preliminary calculation is based on the first four days of the five-day period and uses data from Bloomberg News. The estimate can vary by a few cents from the state price, which is based on figures supplied by Oil Price Information Service.

Hawai'i has the nation's highest gasoline and diesel prices. The average gallon of regular gas was $2.682 on Sunday night in the state, according to the American Automobile Association. That was 24.7 cents higher than a year earlier.

The national average was $2.154 a gallon, or 21 cents more than a year earlier.
