Weng, Martin win DII honors

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Yu Chuan Weng and Hawai'i Pacific's Barbara Martin yesterday were named to the 12-member AVCA All-America first team for NCAA Division II women's volleyball.
Weng, a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter from Hsinchu, Taiwan, led Division II with 6.9 kills per game and finished as the Seasiders' career leader with 1,768. Weng also was a first-team pick during her freshman season and a second-team pick in 2003.
Martin, a 6-3 junior middle blocker from Curitiba, Brazil, averaged 4.69 kills and 1.11 blocks per game.
HPU's Flavia Brakling, a senior outside hitter, and Vera Oliveira, a senior setter, were named to the second team. Hawai'i-Hilo's Taina Savage, a junior outside hitter, was named honorable mention.
Hawai'i Pacific (24-3) and BYUH (20-5) ended their seasons last week after losing in the Pacific Regional.

PROS LEAD AMATEURS IN BURNS CHALLENGE CUP
The professionals took four alternate shot matches yesterday afternoon to take a 7 1/2 to 4 1/2 lead over the amateurs after the first day of the 33rd annual Gov. John A. Burns Challenge Cup at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
The tournament ends today with 12 singles matches between the professionals and amateurs.
During the morning four-ball (best ball), the pros took a 3 1/2-2 1/2 lead.
The pros got two victories each from the teams of Norman-Ganin Asao and Joey Tadeo, Kevin Carll and Regan Lee, and Matt Pakkala and Kirk Nelson. Amateurs Tadd Fujikawa and Chris Souza, and Jonathan Ota and Brandan Kop also posted two victories each.
BASKETBALL
SANDERS NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The University of Hawai'i's Amy Sanders was named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced yesterday.
Sanders, a senior guard from Huntington Beach, Calif., averaged 15 points, 5.3 rebounds and two assists per game to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a third-place finish in the Rainbow Wahine Classic, where she made the all-tournament team.
She scored 14 points, including the game-winning shot with a second remaining, to beat Texas A&M, 68-66; and had 19 points in a 77-67 loss to Wisconsin.
UH-MANOA ATHLETICS
BRYANT SELECTED AS COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR
Bill Bryant has been hired as the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's athletic compliance coordinator, an assistant athletic director-level position, the school announced yesterday.
Bryant was most recently director of compliance, academic support at William & Mary.
Bryant replaces Daniel Arakaki, who becomes director of student services in the athletic department.
Compliance duties include coordinating the rules of compliance with the NCAA, Western Athletic Conference and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
