Hawaiian Home Lands project set for Kaua'i

Advertiser Staff

Forty-nine native Hawaiian families, mostly Hawaiian speakers from Ni'ihau, will benefit from a new Hawaiian Home Lands project in Kekaha, Kaua'i.

Ni'ihau is a privately owned island off the west end of Kaua'i. Residents speak Hawaiian, and many have moved to Kaua'i seeking greater opportunities.

The 49-lot subdivision is being developed on 20 acres of Hawaiian home lands. Twenty-two of the lots will be reserved for families whose income does not exceed $41,360, — 80 percent of the median Kaua'i income of $51,700 for a family of four. A $25,000 subsidy will be available to families making less than 50 percent of the median income.

Menehune Development Co. will build 29 houses. Costs will be $112,620 for a 2 bedroom/1 bath model; $145,720 for a 3 bedroom/2 bath and $188,160 for a 4 bedroom/2 bath model.

Self-Help Housing Corporation of Hawai'i will oversee construction of 20 self-help houses. Costs will be $94,177 for a 3 bedroom/2 bath model and $96,382 for a 4 bedroom/2 bath model.
