A new club, opening today, will showcase some of Hawai'i's ace jazz stylists — singers and instrumentalists.
Called Jazz Minds Arts & Café, the club — at 1661 Kapi'olani Blvd., across from 24 Hour Fitness — expects to feature live jazz, blues and gospel music daily except Sundays.
Keahi Conjugacion, a jazz singer herself, is entertainment director, and will be among the mix of house performers. She will sing with her group, Island Jazz.
Schedules are being finalized to include performers such as Azure McCall, Jimmy Borges, the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, Rolando Sanchez and Salsa Hawai'i, the Steve Jones Trio, Miles Jackson Trio, Keith Scott, Zanuck Lindsey, and DeShannon Higa.
"I am thrilled to be part of this exciting new venture," said Conjugacion in a statement. "We are committed to bringing the public the very best live music available, in comfortable and pleasant surroundings."
The club will showcase entertainment from 8 to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
Young Hae Yi, a native of South Korea who has been an Island resident since 1981, is the owner of Jazz Minds Arts & Café. She said she has wanted to launch a jazz club for two decades and this is "an opportunity to give artists a place to express themselves — and give audiences a place to enjoy the very best music."
Among future endeavors will be a series of music and performance workshops as well as a monthly gospel brunch.
