Woman hit while crossing highway

A 51-year-old woman who was running across Kalaniana'ole Highway in Kailua Friday night was struck by a Jeep driven by a 44-year-old woman, Honolulu police said. The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police said. The collision near Kanapu'u Drive occurred at 9:27 p.m.


KAUA'I

FIRE DESTROYS WAREHOUSE

Fire destroyed a 2,000-square-foot, wooden warehouse-residence in Hanalei yesterday morning, Kaua'i officials said. No one was injured.

The fire began about 7 a.m. and quickly spread. The building was engulfed in flames when Kaua'i firefighters arrived, according to Kaua'i Battalion Chief Russell Yee.

The building sits on the mauka side of Kuhio Highway, next to the Hanalei Center and adjacent Tahiti Nui Restaurant. It was unoccupied, and no other structures were threatened.

MOTORCYCLIST HURT IN COLLISION

A 24-year-old man on a motorcycle collided with a car driven by a 78-year-old woman in Kahului, Maui, Friday night and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, Maui police said.

The collision occurred at 7:30 p.m. when the woman, in a 1997 Mercury sedan, turned left from Kahului Beach Road on to Kanaloa Avenue and hit the 2003 Honda motorcycle, police said. The driver of the car had failed to yield, police said. The motorcycle rider was thrown onto the road. He was not wearing a helmet.

GINOZA NAMED BUDGET DIRECTOR

WAILUKU — Mayor Alan Arakawa named Lloyd Ginoza county budget director.

Ginoza has been a certified public accountant on Maui since 1971 and most recently served as auditor in the county Finance Department.

He previously worked as supervising auditor at Coopers & Lybrand CPAs and controller for Hawaii Omori Corp. in Lahaina. He also ran his own CPA firm for 15 years. Ginoza replaces Sheri Morrison.

STABBING VICTIM CRITICALLY INJURED

Honolulu police responded early yesterday morning to a call of a disturbance involving seven men in a nightclub parking lot on Waiakamilo Road and found one man with a stab wound and another who tried to drive away with an apparent stab wound.

Another man returned to the scene and said he had been assaulted with beer bottles and a cue stick, police said. A 30-year-old stabbing victim was taken to an unidentified hospital in critical condition.

Police said four of the men were 26, 30, 33 and 46 years old.

EVENT TO BENEFIT LIFE FOUNDATION

A Halloween-style fundraiser at Rumours Nightclub tonight, organized by Punahou School students, will raise money for the Life Foundation, an HIV/AIDS support organization.

The fundraiser — "There's Magic in the Air" — organized by Meghan Akim and six other students, runs from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. It will feature a band, DJ, airbrush tattoos and a food bar that will be open for two hours. All high-school students are invited.

Tickets are a $15 donation and include two nonalcoholic drinks, plus a chance to win prizes, including a gift certificate from Maui Divers of Hawai'i, a manicure from Heaven On Earth, Tesoro gift cards, Dave and Buster game cards, and gift baskets from Salon Essentials and Jamba Juice. Tickets will be available at the door.

A number of sponsors are helping support the event, including title sponsor Price Busters, which donated $2,000 and a $100 gift certificate.
