KAHUKU — In classic postseason form, top-ranked Kahuku dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage to crush Kapolei, 47-7, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red quarterfinal at Carleton Weimer Field.
The Red Raiders (7-1) will play Farrington (5-5) Friday in an all-Eastern Division semifinal at Aloha Stadium. During the regular season, Kahuku beat Farrington, 43-0.
The Hurricanes (5-4), who finished tied for second in the West, but were the third seed by tiebreaker, ended their season having lost their last three games.
Kahuku showed its power by scoring on its first five possessions in taking a 34-0 lead into the half. Running back Malosi Te'o had 112 of his game-high 196 yards in the first half. He had only one carry in the second half, an 84-yard TD run. The Red Raiders had amassed 311 yards by the half.
"The bottom line is, in the trenches, they just dominated us," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "You can have all the fancy speed, great receivers and runners, but it's not going to make any difference at all if we can't control the line of scrimmage."
Kahuku's first series consisted of only runs in a six-play, 86-yard drive that ended with running back Kamuela Alisa racing the final 44 yards with 4:40 left in the first quarter.
Kahuku's next series, again all runs, went 69 yards on five plays with Alisa scoring from the 5 with six seconds left in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.
After demonstrating prowess with the run, Kahuku went to the air on its next series, moving 52 yards on five plays with quarterback Kaulin Krebs hitting Devin Unga on a 25-yard TD pass to make it 20-0 with 8:56 left in the half.
A Kapolei fumble from its 15 was returned to its 1 by Kahuku, setting up running back Joseph Whittacker's TD plunge on first down to make it 26-0, just 20 seconds after its previous score.
Kapolei threatened later in the quarter, but free safety Suaesi Tuimaunei's interception in the end zone off a running-back option pass from Aaron Santiago resulted in a touchback.
The Red Raiders continued their dominance, moving 80 yards on six plays with Krebs hitting Redmond Tutor over the middle for a 60-yard TD pass with 3:20 left in the half. Richard Torres ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 34-0 at intermission.
Kahuku wasted little time scoring in the second half. On its second series, Te'o ran 84 yards on first down to make it 41-0 and set the running clock because of the 35-point-differential mercy rule.
That lasted about four minutes as Kapolei got on the board on a 4-yard TD pass from Brad Padayao to Caleb Spencer. It was only the second time this season Kahuku has been scored upon this season. The other time was in a 23-6 loss to Castle.
"I love this team because they're tough and they play hard," Hernandez said. "I'm proud of them."
