The family of a Pearl City woman who died after a pickup truck hit her motorcycle on the Moanalua Freeway extension July 30 has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the driver of the pickup.
Kapiolani Aea, 38, was killed in a hit-and-run collision after her motorcycle was struck from behind while heading north on the extension, about 210 feet north of the H-3 Freeway eastbound entrance ramp. The impact knocked her off the motorcycle and the pickup ran over her, police said.
Aea died of internal injuries. A 28-year-old passenger, identified in the lawsuit as Helena Bautista, was injured.
The lawsuit says that the driver of the pickup truck, Heriberto L. Ocampo Jr., fled and was arrested about two hours later. No charges have been filed.
In the lawsuit, Aea's family said Ocampo was speeding and under the influence of alcohol. Ocampo's failure to stop and render aid were "substantial" factors in causing Aea's death, the lawsuit said.
Ocampo could not be reached for comment yesterday.
The lawsuit was filed in Circuit Court yesterday by attorney Woodruff Soldner on behalf of Winston Chun, Wayne Chun and Wade Chun, brothers of Aea. The family is seeking unspecified damages.
