UH is the only NCAA staff with two former NFL head coaches. Jerry Glanville, who was with the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons, and June Jones, who was with the Falcons and San Diego Chargers, now are enjoying the college life.
JERRY GLANVILLE
Position: Defensive coordinator.
Hometown: Perrysburg, Ohio.
Height: "5-10, if I stand up straight. 5-9 on most days. It depends on how June works me in practice."
Weight: 196 pounds.
Best 40 time: "Thank God they didn't time us."
Best bench press: "Thank God they didn't do that, either. ... That's the only reason I got a scholarship."
Non-football talent: "I can drive. On a circle track, probably 204 (mph). In drag racing, 186."
Dream non-football job: "I love driving race cars. I was fortunate enough to do that for 15 years. You know, ducking underneath somebody on turn 4 and then beating him to the finish line. I won a race one time. The whole day, I probably led for 25 feet, but it was the last 25 feet. You can't beat that."
Best June Jones story: "We were playing the Rams in L.A. I was in the press box. They ran a blitz and it was the loudest I've ever heard anyone hit in my life. (Jones) got hit in the ribs. It was so loud I didn't think he'd ever play. He had on rib pads, which were revolutionary in those days, and he didn't miss a beat."
JUNE JONES
Position: Head coach.
Hometown: Portland, Ore.
Height: 6-4 1/2.
Weight: 205 pounds.
Best 40 time: "Mouse (Davis, Jones' mentor) told me I ran 4.95 (seconds) one time, and he lied, I'm sure.
Best bench press: "Most I ever bench-pressed was 275."
Non-football talent: "Golf. I started when I was 5 or 6 years old. I wanted to make money, and started caddying when I was 6, 7, 8. I got pretty heavy into it then."
Dream non-football job: "A dream job would be bodysurfing at Makapu'u from sunup to sundown. That would be the best job in the world."
Best Jerry Glanville story: "One time we were coaching with the Oilers in San Angelo. We went to a bar/club down there. They had a pina colada machine. I always wondered why Jerry didn't drink. He had two or three that one night. Then we decided to go to the mall. We're in the mall, and I turned around and he was sound asleep on the bench in the mall, the head coach for the Houston Oilers. And then I knew: this guy is a little different."
