Outfielder Victorino recalled by Phillies

It's been a whirlwind week for Maui's Shane Victorino.

On Tuesday, the center fielder for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons was named the Most Valuable Player of the International League.

Yesterday, the Philadelphia Phillies purchased the contract of the 1999 St. Anthony graduate.

A hot summer put Victorino in line for the call-up. Always known for his defensive skills, the 24-year-old saw his batting average dip to .243 on June 22. That's when he kicked it up a notch, and then some.

Victorino strung together five straight multiple-hit games, and had a 22-game hitting streak when he was recalled. He was twice named the league's Batter of the Week, and his .310 batting average was eighth in the league.

He also was among the league leaders in hits (third with 153), slugging percentage (third with .534), extra-base hits (tied for first with 59), runs (first with 93) and triples (first with 16). According to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Web site, Victorino had one more triple than any player in pro baseball this season.

Victorino was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1999. He was later picked up in the Rule 5 draft by San Diego, where he made his major league debut in 2003. But the Padres ended up offering him back to the Dodgers, and he had been with their organization until the Phillies chose him in the Rule 5 draft last winter.
