Secondary educators and others interested in teaching about the Holocaust can attend a conference at Sacred Hearts Academy on Oct 8.

"Teaching about the Holocaust in the Secondary Language Arts & Social Studies Classroom" has been organized by Jennifer Kemp-Smith, a Holocaust Memorial Museum fellow, who attended a summer institute at the museum and also traveled to Israel as part of the Advance Bearing Witness Program.

The conference will feature a Hawai'i resident who is a Holocaust survivor.

Kemp-Smith said the goal is to make the Holocaust meaningful to teenagers by bringing in themes such as hate groups, prejudice, civic responsibility, the power of language and the role of the bystander.

Late registration is being accepted. Cost for the conference is $20. For more information, call Sacred Hearts at 734-5058 or e-mail jksmith@sacredhearts.org.
