Veteran local attorney and former state Land Use Commission chairman ROY CATALANI has been named vice president of strategic planning and government affairs for the interisland cargo company Young Brothers Ltd. He has been an attorney for 20 years and has experience in governmental, regulatory, planning and budgetary matters. For the past two years, he has been a partner in the law firm Rush Moore LLP. When Catalani once served as deputy director of the state Office of State Planning, his responsibilities included management of the state's Coastal Zone Management Program, Land Use Division and Geographic Information System. His legal background has also included partnership in the law firms Catalani Nakanishi & Caliboso, and Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. Young Brothers provides interisland cargo service statewide, with ports in Honolulu, Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i and Kawaihae.
KAREN LEE KLEMME, a Big Island certified rehabilitation registered nurse, was elected president of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses during the organization's annual conference this month in Las Vegas. Klemme has been on the group's board of directors since 2000. She is also president-elect of the local chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, and a board member of the Hawai'i Community Caregivers Network. The Kailua, Kona, private practice nurse is also a certified nurse life care planner.
Bank of Hawaii Corp.'s Investment Services Group has named SHELLEY B. THOMPSON executive vice president and chief fiduciary officer. Thompson, who has worked more than 20 years in the trust and wealth management industry, will oversee the company's Private Client Services business, which includes personal trust, private banking, foundations, retirement plan services, fiduciary asset management, trust tax and trust real estate. Before joining Bank of Hawaii, Thompson served as executive vice president and director of wealth management at City National Bank, Beverly Hills, Calif.; and has held senior executive positions with U.S. Trust Co., New York; U.S. Bankcorp; CitiCorp; and Wells Fargo Bank. She also spent seven years as an attorney, specializing in estate planning, probate and trust law in Los Angeles. Thompson is also co-trustee of the Lillian Disney Trust, established by the late widow of Walt Disney. Bank of Hawaii is Bank of Hawaii Corp.'s principal subsidiary.
Bank of Hawaii Insurance Services Inc. has hired JEFFERY BRONAUGH to be president. The Bank of Hawaii subsidiary is an independent insurance agency that mainly serves commercial clients and has operations on O'ahu, Maui and the Big Island. Bronaugh, who has 28 years in the insurance industry, will oversee strategic direction and growth, and work to further integrate the company into Bank of Hawaii's overall operations. Previously, Bronaugh was sales manager for First Insurance Co. of Hawai'i Ltd., and is immediate past president of the local chapter of Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriters.
Hawaiian Homestead Technology Inc. has promoted Waimanalo homesteader PAUL RICHARDS to operations manager. The company has worked to bring technology jobs to the Hawaiian Home Land communities of Waimanalo, and Anahola on Kaua'i, and plans to do so also for Papakolea. HHT works with Indian tribes in 12 states to create sustainable economic development in rural native communities. More than 20 rural Hawai'i residents work on government contracts to convert paper manuals and documents to electronic formats, under a document conversion program created by U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye. Richards is a veteran in community building and business management, and a volunteer in Hawaiian communities. All HHT profits are invested back into the community-based initiatives.
Alexander & Baldwin Inc. real estate subsidiary, A&B Properties, has announced these hirings:
BARBARA F.M. FURUGEN has returned to A&B Properties as manager, investment analysis, overseeing analysis and research of the company's capital investments and preparation of operating and strategic plans. She is a former A&B senior management information systems analyst, and for five years at A&B Properties she was systems and senior financial analyst. Before rejoining the company, she was with Punahou School's communications office. A&B owns 91,000 acres in Hawai'i, making it the state's fourth-largest private landowner.
Kaua'i projects such as the Port Allen residential and commercial developments, Ele'ele expansion and Brydeswood subdivision will be overseen by JAMES D. HASENYAGER with his recent appointment to be Kaua'i project manager for development for A&B Properties. His responsibilities will range from initial planning and approvals, through design and construction, to final marketing and sales. Before joining A&B, the 24-year veteran of project management and construction engineering was Kaua'i general manager at CB Richard Ellis Hawai'i Inc., where he managed Kukui Grove Shopping Center, Kukui Grove Commercial Village, and Lihu'e Land Co. and Grove Farm Rentals residential and agricultural land leases.
GLENN YAMASHITA has been promoted to chief financial officer of the interactive-television application developer Broadband iTV. The Honolulu-based company enables organizations and consumers to create their own content for interactive television using simple, Web-based tools. BBiTV recently facilitated the launch of the "HMSA Now" video-on-demand health information TV channel and Hawaii TVClassifieds. Yamashita, who joined the firm in 2003, had been vice president for finance and administration.
LAURICE OTSUKA has joined AMERICAN SAVINGS BANK as vice president and commercial banking officer. The certified public accountant is former vice president and business banking officer at Home Street Bank.
